Tips to Stay Merry While Managing a Holiday Move

Friday, December 16th, 2016 at 5:34pm Engel Völkers

There’s no better place to celebrate the holidays than at home where it’s cozy, familiar and where memories live. If you happen to be moving to a new home for the holidays, you may be feeling added levels of emotion, excitement and anxiety. While this time of year can add to the usual stresses of moving, here are a few tips to get you through the holidays and settled into your new home with a bit more ease.

Open up the gift of time

Try to ensure that appointments with movers, landlords, helpers and rental companies are locked in ahead of time. These services get booked early for the holidays and holiday hours mean fewer options.

Also, to put your mind at ease think about how company-provided holidays can give you the time to move and unpack. This can help you save on personal days, which you may be able to use for a much-deserved vacation or staycation later in the year!

Take advantage of holiday opportunities

While preparing for your move, keep the holidays in mind. This is an opportunity for you to rediscover old holiday decorations that may have gone missing for a few years.  Just make sure to label the moving box so they don’t get lost again and consider new traditions as you settle into your new home.

It’s also a great time to take advantage of holiday and post-holiday sales, which offer extra savings for household items that you may need or want for your new home.

Spread holiday cheer with new neighbors

The holiday season brings the best out of everyone and there couldn’t be a better time to meet your new neighbors while everyone is cheerful and in the holiday spirit. You could, for example, pay a visit with candy canes or other holiday-inspired treats – keep it simple as you don’t want to add too much to your already full plate of to-dos. You might even find yourself on the other end of that arrangement. Either way, ‘tis the season to be jolly.

Be merry and don’t stress

In order to ensure that that the holidays are not dominated by the stress of moving, furnish and decorate one of the rooms of your new home after moving in – preferably the living room – and remove all signs of the move. Not all boxes need to be unpacked immediately. Every now and then you can have your move be out of sight and out of mind, and enjoy a hot apple cider instead.
